Without a single public comment, the Lawrence City Commission adopted a $27.76 million 1982 budget for a city tax increase of just more than 1.5 mills. The adopted budget, little changed from a preliminary proposal released a month earlier, raised city taxes for property owners from 39.33 mills to 40.937 mills. The city levy combined with the Douglas County, Lawrence school district and state levies was to mean a total rate of 123.221 mills, an increase of 5.35 percent from 1981.
