An early morning car chase resulted in a busted fire hydrant and a road closure on Ninth Street from Iowa Street to Highland Drive.

Police first noticed the Mustang for erratic driving at the intersection of 15th and Connecticut Streets. The unidentified driver of the car refused to pull over and eluded police for more than two miles.

Authorities used a spike strip placed in front of Joe’s Bakery at 616 W. Ninth St. to slow the vehicle to a stop. While traveling westbound on Ninth Street near Highland Drive, the car hit the curb and a fire hydrant. The suspect driving the car, fled on foot and was caught and arrested by police in the Hillcrest Shopping Center at the southwest corner of Ninth and Iowa.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, the male driver had been let out on bond earlier in the night.

The three other passengers in the car sustained no injuries and were released at the scene.

Police said the man will be charged with numerous traffic violations including reckless driving and driving under the influence, as well eluding police, leaving the scene of a crime and endangering others.

Water officials told authorities the accident caused low levels at the nearby water tower on Stratford Road. Barricades were ordered to block the flooded area on Ninth Street between Iowa and Highland as crews cleaned up.
