The Lawrence Public Library will be closed on Monday while staff members work to install a new online catalog system.

The library, 707 Vt., will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The $160,000 upgrade replaces the current system that has been in place for 10 years. Library Director Bruce Flanders said some of the advantages of the new system include:

¢ A more thorough description of where a book is located in the library.

¢ The ability of a user to limit searches to available items, meaning that items currently checked out will not appear in a search.

¢ Searches that will focus on just one particular type of medium, such as books, CDs, DVDs, or audio books.

¢ Search results that can be sorted by year of publication.

¢ Selected books will have portions of the book’s contents posted online so readers can “look inside” to determine if the book meets their needs.

¢ Patrons can choose to receive an e-mail message alerting them three days before a book is due back to the library.

Later this year, the system will be upgraded to allow patrons to pay fines online via credit or debit cards.
