Donations roll in for school supplies

August 11, 2006

ECKAN's telephone rang off the proverbial hook Thursday as Lawrence-area residents called in with offers to help buy school supplies for needy children.

"It's incredible," said ECKAN coordinator Janet Collier. "We've had calls all morning. We've had civic organizations come in. We just had an anonymous donor give $500."

Earlier this week, the agency announced it had run out of money to help low-income families buy school supplies.

"It's pretty clear this is a community that really cares," Collier said. "We want to send out a big 'thank you' to everybody."

thanks everyone!

note: there are already made up packs of supplies at Hyvee for $5.

Yes, $5.

thought I might buy a few of them and take them to Eckan. Cheaper that way than buying individual supplies.

You can buy glue, Elmer's glue sticks, Crayola colored pencils, Roseart crayons, notebooks, Office Depot pens, and pencil boxes for $.10 each at Target and Office Depot.

ECKAN is a great place for a family in time of need! God bless all associated with running this program. Hope you will be there to help the needy in the future! If there are people who are looking for a great program to donate to, this would be the one! I used to volunteer at this organization about nine years ago when I first moved to Lawrence. Great place!
