Detroit ? The Minnesota Twins will place ailing left-hander Francisco Liriano on the 15-day disabled list today.

The Twins recalled right-hander Boof Bonser from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday to take Liriano’s place in the rotation. Bonser, beginning his third stint in the majors this season, is scheduled to start Saturday against Toronto.

Liriano is bothered by what the team is calling muscular inflammation in his throwing elbow.

Today’s move will be made retroactive to Tuesday.

After his previous start was skipped as a precaution, Liriano threw only four innings in his last outing – a 9-3 loss to Detroit on Monday in which he gave up four runs and a season-high 10 hits. Near tears after the game, he said the pain in his forearm had grown worse and closer to his elbow. Liriano, 12-3 with a league-leading 2.19 earned-run average, will have an extensive MRI exam today.

“We’ll have him all checked out,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “The one thing we know is that his arm is bothering him, so we’re going to give it plenty of time to rest. We’re going to make sure of that.”

Gardenhire said it was too early to know whether Liriano will pitch again this season.

“We’ll do whatever is best for this young man’s arm,” he said.

Bonser is 2-3 with a 5.67 ERA in eight starts for the Twins, who used him Aug. 2 when Liriano was scratched because of inflammation in his forearm.

“The last time we brought him up, he pitched on four days rest because we had some many injuries and uncertainties,” Gardenhire said. “If he uses all his pitches, he’ll be fine.”

Bonser was acquired after the 2003 season along with Liriano and closer Joe Nathan from San Francisco for catcher A.J. Pierzynski and cash.

Top prospect Matt Garza, a right-hander recalled Tuesday from Triple-A, is to make his major league debut Friday against the Blue Jays.
