More than 5,000 turned out for the annual demolition derby at the Douglas County Free Fair, and Ken Jackson of Princeton was the eventual winner. The previous year’s winner was disqualified before the battle because the doors of his vehicle were found to be filled with concrete.

Artist Dale Eldred defended his controversial sculpture, “Salina Piece,” which was recently vandalized. The massive black steel girders were due to be moved from the area of 17th and Indiana to a spot on Kansas University’s west campus.
