Angels outlast White Sox

Escobar fueled by home-run ball in make-up game

? Kelvim Escobar put aside the past and got a rare win against the Chicago White Sox.

Escobar pitched six solid innings, and Vladimir Guerrero hit one of three solo homers for the Los Angeles Angels in a 6-3 victory Monday night.

“I know I don’t have good success against this team, but I’ve pitched well at times and still haven’t gotten a good result,” Escobar said.

Escobar (8-9) gave up two runs and six hits to improve to 2-9 against the White Sox, including 1-7 as a starter. He also lost a pair of games to Chicago in the American League championship series last October.

“I was out there forgetting about what happened last year and just trying to pitch,” he said. “It’s been tough on me all year, pitching well and not winning many games.”

Robb Quinlan and Jose Molina also homered off struggling Chicago starter Mark Buehrle, dropping the defending World Series champions 10 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save in 30 chances.

Jim Thome hit his 34th homer for Chicago.

The game was a makeup of a May 11 rainout.

Tigers 9, Twins 3

Detroit – Zach Miner won a matchup of impressive rookies, and the Tigers roughed up Francisco Liriano again in a win over Minnesota.

Los Angeles angels closer francisco rodriguez, right, is congratulated by manager Mike Scioscia after closing the door on the Chicago White Sox. Los Angeles beat Chicago, 6-3, Monday in Chicago.

Liriano (12-3) has a 7.63 ERA against Detroit this season, more than five times higher than his ERA (1.39) against the rest of the majors. He struggled after missing his last start with forearm inflammation. Liriano gave up four runs and a season-high 10 hits with four walks.

Blue Jays 8, Orioles 1

Toronto – Lyle Overbay homered and drove in five runs, and Brian Tallet and two relievers combined on a two-hitter in place of injured starter Ted Lilly to lead the Toronto past Baltimore.

Lilly was scratched just before his scheduled start because of a stiff neck. Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won two straight following a season-high seven-game losing skid.

Athletics 7, Rangers 4

Oakland, Calif. – Mark Ellis drove in four runs with a homer and a bases-loaded double, leading the surging Athletics over Texas.

Milton Bradley also homered and drove in two runs for the AL West-leading A’s, who won for the eighth time in nine games.

They opened a 10-game homestand after going 5-1 on the road last week against division rivals Los Angeles and Seattle.

This victory pushed Oakland to a season-high 10 games above .500, maintaining its three-game lead over the Angels atop the AL West.

Mariners 5, Devil Rays 4

Seattle – Raul Ibanez hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Seattle’s bullpen pitched 42â3 scoreless innings to help the Mariners beat Tampa Bay.

Ibanez’s 23rd homer – one short of his career high – gave Seattle the lead for good and began to ease the bad memories of a weekend sweep by Oakland that left the Mariners 61â2 games back in the AL West.

Ibanez lined an 0-1 fastball from Tampa Bay starter Tim Corcoran (4-3) into the seats in right field.

It was his first homer since July 29 in Cleveland.
