Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 7, 1906: “Both the city and county tax levies were set yesterday and it will be extremely pleasing to the taxpayers to learn both will be a trifle lower for next year. The city levy will be 71.75 mills, the county levy 24 mills. It also has been learned the state levy is down to 5.5 mills, a drop of almost one mill. The World predicted this would happen when higher valuation figures were released only recently. : Chuck Woods, a young boy attempting to hop off a Santa Fe passenger train, fell under the train and was horribly mangled. He was returning after being gone several months. Apparently he lost his footing after jumping and fell under the train. : Street workers began work today in cutting down Quincy Hill east of town. When the work is done, the crest of the hill will be three or four feet lower than at present and will be a welcome change. : The rains Saturday and Sunday literally “made” the local corn for this year. It was badly needed and very welcome.”
