Orioles’ Benson shelved by elbow tendinitis

? Kris Benson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the Baltimore Orioles, who figure the right-hander needs more time to recover from tendinitis in his right elbow.

The move is retroactive to July 26, the day after Benson last pitched. He will be eligible to come off the disabled list on Aug. 10, a day off for Baltimore.

Obtained in an offseason trade with the New York Mets, Benson is 9-9 with a 4.71 earned-run average in 22 starts.

The Orioles replaced him on the roster with reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who returned from bereavement leave.
