A two car accident Tuesday at Baldwin Junction has claimed the life of an 84 year old Baldwin city woman.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 84 year old Charlene Pohl died Tuesday evening at a Kansas city area hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash at the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 56 about 10 miles south of Lawrence.

The Highway patrol report says pohl was headed west on Highway 56 around noon Tuesday, failed to properly stop at the intersection with Highway 59, and was struck by a northbound semi.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

Just last month, state highway officials said they intend to put in a four-way stop at the intersection, but the changes have yet to be made.

And motorists on Highway 59 still do not have to stop at Highway 56.

what are the stats on age correlation and auto accidents? is it my imagination that the oldest and youngest drivers have a significantly high incident rate?

Why hasn't Sebelius done something about this intersection yet?

Maybe they could rework it before November and she could have another photo-op at the renovated intersection.

I'm from an area that built a new highway across existing roads, thus creating new intersection where the highway traffic didn't stop but traffic coming from the other direction had to. Unfortunately, there too, there were numerous accidents such as the one described here. The states solution in that incident was not to stop traffic both ways, but to put signs up telling the cross traffic that the highway traffic does not stop. Regardless of what happens, you're going to continue to have accidents like this.

Anyone want to bet that there will be yet another fatality before the triplicate paperwork, funds allocated, and highway workers can get around to putting on a 4-way stop? Double or nothing the frequency of serious injury and fatalities at that intersection dramaticlly declines almost immediately afterwards?
