Teen drowns helping struggling children

? The body of a Dodge City teenager who drowned helping young children who waded too far into Coldwater Lake was recovered Tuesday.

Ivan Suarez, 17, disappeared in the southwest Kansas lake Sunday night. Comanche County Sheriff David Timmons said Suarez apparently went under at a spot where the water drops suddenly from about 4 1/2 feet deep to at least 10 feet deep.

“This kid couldn’t swim, and he didn’t tell anybody that,” Timmons said.

Suarez was among several teens who rushed to the children’s aid when they got into trouble.

“He picked up one child, and he handed the child to the girl standing beside him, and she turned to give the child to someone else, and she turned back and he was gone,” Timmons said.
