6News staff members collected enough fans and cash Saturday to donate more than 50 fans to the Salvation Army.

Staff members were at both Lawrence Hy-Vee locations accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

They used the donated funds to buy fans from Hy-Vee, a co-sponsor for the drive.

“With all of the triple-digit temperatures this summer, we know there are a lot of people in need of relief, and this is just a small thing we could do to help others,” 6News Director Cody Howard said.

Howard said Saturday’s effort was the most successful since the drive started in 2001.

The Salvation Army distributes the fans to those in need.
