Lawrence Hidden Valley Camp for Girl Scouts is celebrating 50 years. The locally owned and managed urban wilderness camp was purchased in June 1956 by funds made available through the Alfred Bromelsick Trust.

The first event of a yearlong celebration “Get Spiffy for the 50” will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hidden Valley Camp.

“Get Spiffy for the 50” will involve camp maintenance projects, and scouts will attempt to unearth several time capsules, including one dating back to the first Day Camp in 1957. Volunteers have worked diligently to ascertain the location of these time capsules in three different areas and Girl Scouts will help unearth them.

“Get Spiffy for the 50” also will include the dedication of the Universally Accessible Composting Toilet (UACT), made possible with a grant from the Kriz Foundation, and a new fire ring, The Gathering Place. About 400 Girl Scouts and their leaders have registered to participate.
