FCE and 4-H news

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met April 11 in Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Myrna Hartford, president, passed out forms for District Recognition Day, which will be May 10 in Johnson County. The registration fee is $12 and it covers lunch. The deadline to register is Monday.

Susan Krumm, an agent in family and consumer sciences with K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County, reported 581 Douglas County residents, a record number, participated in the “Walk Kansas” program.

Rachel Purvis talked about the trip Oct. 10-12 to Springfield, Ill., and Hannibal, Mo., being sponsored by the FCE Council. Reservations must be made by Sept. 6. For more information about the trip, call Alice Eisele at 843-7515.

The next FCE Council meeting will be at 9 a.m. June 6 in the Deal Six Auditorium.

The March meeting of the Pioneer 4-H Club was Parents Night. Parents were in charge of the meeting and presenting the program.

Janet Jehle presided during the meeting. Members answered roll call by naming their favorite cereal. Lennette Siscoe read the minutes of the February meeting. Tamara Capra gave the treasurer’s report. Lennette Siscoe, reporter, announced that she submitted articles to area papers. Mark Jehle and Larry Wilson reminded 4-H’ers about deadlines in April.

Lennette Siscoe gave a demonstration on table setting, and Carol Keen presented a project talk about making wine.

The Douglas County Kansas 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year.

Those who received a Ralph G. and Cloyd B. Achning Memorial 4-H Scholarship were: Erin Ashcraft, James Ashcraft, Johnathon Berg, Michelle Colgan, Callie Fishburn, Kelly Flanders, Colin Hamel, Kalie Harris, Kelli Harris, Reagon Heikes, Caitlin Johnson, Kailey Mesler, Marla Metsker and Braxton Nottingham, Lawrence; Dale Baker, John Brown, Lindsey Hitchcock, Leah Hoelscher, Mark Jehle, Kalli Keen and Katy Taul, Baldwin; Ashley Moran, Timothy Moran, Kyle Morgison, Spencer Wilson and William Wilson, Eudora; and Mark Flory and Cybill Milburn, Overbrook.

Melissa Colgan, Lawrence, received the Bev and Bill Bradley Family Scholarship. Samantha Milligan, Baldwin, earned the Clyde and Pauline Husted Memorial Scholarship.

Elizabeth Pendleton and Margaret Pendleton, both of Lawrence, received the George O. and Mildred M. Luckan Scholarship.

Anne Dinsdale, Lawrence, received the Oletha Blevins Scholarship.

The Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club met at 6:30 p.m. March 13 at Stull United Methodist Church. Members came dressed in as much green as possible to celebrate the club’s annual 4-H Spirit Night.

Kelsey Wulfkuhle led the club with a song. Council members talked about Rock Springs 4-H Camp and answered questions.

Talks and demonstrations were given by Landon Jamison, Ashley Lesser, Scott Johnston and Daisy Johnson.

Winners were chosen for the Spirit Night activities. They were: Daisy Johnson, first; Macy Wulfkuhle, second; and Kelsey Wulfkuhle, third.

Emily Krysztof, president, called the April 5 meeting of the Palmyra 4-H Club to order at Ives Chapel.

Kaitlyn Christie led the club in playing “Simon Says.” Justin Christie gave a report on the Kansas City Royals. Wesley Callahan, Kaleb Horne and Emily Krysztof led the club in singing “Alice the Camel.”

Jamie Goff gave a safety report on wearing a safety belt. Megan Brown, leader, announced there were sewing lessons today at Stitch & Needle Workshop. Members were reminded the deadline for adding or deleting projects is Monday.

Wesley Callahan’s beef record book won at the state level and will compete at the national level.

After the meeting, a surprise bridal shower was given for Megan Brown.

The next meeting will be Wednesday at Ives Chapel.
