Mike and Sonya Schinkel, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Neva Elaine Schinkel, born April 15, 2006, in Lawrence.

Matt and Dana LaPoint, Santa Monica, Calif., announce the birth of their daughter, Gina Monroe LaPoint, born March 19, 2006, at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. She has a sister, Elle Marie, 3.

Maternal grandparents are Don and Judy Lutz, Lakin. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Ann LaPoint, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Clarence Clyman, Buffalo, Okla., and Leslie LaPoint, Iron Mountain, Mich.

The family of Lois Gish will have a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 at the Wingert’s barn, 693 E. 1250 Road, Lawrence, to celebrate her 85th birthday. Family and friends are invited to attend. She requests no gifts.

Baker University student Stacie Garland, Lawrence, recently was named to Alpha Delta Sigma during Baker University’s Academic Honors Ceremony. Alpha Delta Sigma is Baker’s highest academic honorary society.

Five Lawrence schools were named Honor Teams and three Lawrence players named All-State in chess by the Kansas Scholastic Chess Assn. for the 2005-06 season. Southwest Junior High School and Free State High School won Honor Team selection in the High School Division, for being among the top 10 teams in Kansas this season. Quail Run, Wakarusa Valley and Cordley schools were named Honor Teams in the Elementary Division.

Individually, Thomas Reams and Thomas Clark, both of SWJHS, were named All-State in High School, and Quail Run’s Cole Reams made All-State in the Elementary Division.

Kansas University hosted a Mathematics Competition on April 1. More than 160 students competed.

The competition was divided into three age groups: fifth and sixth grade, junior high school and high school.

The students competed for cash prizes given to the top three places in each age group. The exams consisted of five questions that took 40 minutes to complete.

Jack Porter, professor of mathematics, coordinated the competition.

Lawrence winners were Nikolaus Schmidt, first place, and Adelle Loney, honorable mention, fifth- and sixth-grade division; JiHye Ban, third-place tie, Jason Chang and Dravid Joseph, honorable mention, junior high division; Benjamin Greenberg, first, Shiv Subramaniam, second-place tie, John Murray, third, Jing Li, honorable mention, high school division.
