Time to get serious

Kansas seniors key as OU, Texas loom

There will be no more juggling for Kansas University baseball coach Ritch Price.

Starting today, the skipper will not jumble the middle of his order. The Jayhawks’ offense only will go as far as seniors Ritchie Price, Matt Baty, Gus Milner and Jared Schweitzer can carry it.

“I made the decision that I was going to put our four seniors in the 2-3-4-5 holes,” Ritch Price said. “I’m going to put the next three weeks of the Big 12 Conference in their hands.”

The four will need to quickly settle in – the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners start a three-game weekend series at 7 tonight at Hoglund Ballpark.

“It’s a huge weekend for us,” Price said. “There’s a six-game swing in the next two weeks, and we all hold destinies in our hands.”

Entering the series tied for fourth in the conference with only three weeks to play, KU (31-16, 9-9) can almost smell its first NCAA postseason appearance in 12 years.

Still, two major obstacles stand in the way: the Sooners this weekend and a date next week with No. 7 Texas.

Oklahoma enters as arguably the hottest team in the nation. The Sooners have won 11 straight, including back-to-back series sweeps of Missouri and Texas Tech. The team also leads the NCAAs with a .983 fielding percentage.

KU has won seven of its last eight games, scoring an average of 9.1 runs during that stretch. A key has been the continued health of the Jayhawk seniors, who hold four of the team’s top six batting averages.

“They need to carry the club through the next six games,” Price said.

Daniel McCutchen takes the mound for the Sooners tonight. The senior enters with an earned-run average of 3.46 and 80 strikeouts in 88.1 innings.

“Oklahoma’s going to walk in,” Price said, “with three of the best power arms in our conference.”

Following McCutchen in the series will be right-handers Steve Guerra and P.J. Sandoval. The two have combined for a 14-2 record this season.

KU will counter with Sean Land (4-6, 5.03 ERA) tonight. The junior picked up a no-decision after allowing two runs in five innings of an 8-5 victory Friday over Kansas State.
