Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 28, 1906: “These are important times at Ottawa University. The Baptist school is celebrating its 41st anniversary with appropriate exercises and events and it is a time many are enjoying. :

“The farmers from the Agricultural College in Manhattan defeated the Kansas Jayhawkers 8-6 in baseball. The game abounded in errors of the worst kind. The KU pitchers got terrible support and the farmers ran away with the game. :

“A number of local people who were in or near the San Francisco earthquake and survived are returning and telling grim tales of what happened and how lucky they were to escape unharmed. Ed Irwin says houses were torn like cards. He said what the quakes didn’t destroy, fires did, and there still is no certainty about how many were killed and injured, many seriously. :

“Abe Wolfson’s pawn shop was burglarized last night and about $125 in cutlery and guns was lost. :

“Many think the coming Sunday School convention here will be one of the most important events of the year and more public support is called for to make the people welcome. So far, there is a big scarcity of rooms for the visitors.”
