Negotiators agree on marriage age bill

? No one under age 16 could marry in Kansas under legislation worked out Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

Under the House version, no one under 16 could be married in Kansas and anyone age 16 or 17 could marry if they have parental or judicial permission.

The Senate reworked the bill to allow those under 16 to marry only if they get permission from a judge. Negotiators decided to go along with the House version.

The legislation, requested by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, was prompted by a case in which a 22-year-old Falls City, Neb., man impregnated a 14-year-old girl and then married her last year in Hiawatha.

Kansas doesn’t have a minimum marriage age if there is parental or judicial approval.
