The Douglas County Commission reaffirmed an earlier action to reject the low bid for a new truck from a Kansas City, Mo., firm in favor of a $1,900 higher bid from a Lawrence dealer. The commissioners were told they might be in technical violation of a state law calling for acceptance of the “lowest responsible” bid. The local bid came from Landmark Ford, the Kansas City area bid from Midway Ford. The commissioners said the local firm could provide better and more consistent service and that this would save money in the long run.

The litter of broken glass from beer bottles tossed into Lawrence parks and along roads prompted some local residents to urge the city to consider an ordinance to limit or eliminate the sale of beverages in glass containers. Protesters called the containers health and road hazards.

The Lawrence Open School said it planned to stay in the same location for the coming year after failing in its second bid to become part of the District 497 operation. Michael Bryant was open school coordinator. The school was at 14th Street and Monterey Way and was to expand to a sixth grade.
