Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 26, 1906: “Did Lawrence bite off more than it could chew when it landed the state Sunday School convention? There is obvious trouble for accommodations and newspapers all over the state are taking stock and criticizing about the slowness of our town to rise to the challenge of a major convention. Canvasses continue to find proper accommodations for the coming convention but so far only 300 spots are confirmed. More than 1,000 more are badly needed. Help in any way you can. : More of us need to talk happiness. It never does any good to frown and scowl. : The Democrats have prevailed upon W.A. Harris, ex-senator from Kansas, to run for governor. Most consider it a hopeless cause because of Republican domination of the state. : We are all due to be paying higher insurance rates because of the demands brought about for almost all companies by the San Francisco earthquake. We hope companies are honest and do the best they can to hold down rates, but we understand the need for some to boost them.”
