TULSA, OKLA. ? Kansas University junior Gary Woodland tied for seventh, while the Jayhawks as a team placed eighth at the Big 12 golf championships on Tuesday at Southern Hills CC.

KU’s golfers finished with 897 strokes. Oklahoma won with 858.

Woodland, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished at 5-over-par 215 after a 75 in the final round.

Senior Pete Krsnich tied for 32nd after carding a 77 in the final round for a 225. Junior Tyler Docking tied for 45th after a final round of 76 gave him a 229 total. Senior Luke Trammell tied for 52nd after posting a 232 total with his 78 in the final round.

Freshman Zach Pederson totaled a 234 total and placed 57th after an 80 in the third round.

KU’s team battled more than the course this week as the coaches and four of the five players (excluding Woodland) suffered from food poisoning which began after a team meal Sunday night.

“The course played difficult today with the temperature and wind,” KU coach Ross Randall said. “I was very pleased with our team’s grit and determination considering their health and physical state. Gary struggled a little today, but had a very solid overall tournament.”

KU will now await word on whether it has qualified for an NCAA Regional bid. The tournament begins on May 18.

The team results: Oklahoma 858, Texas 862, Texas A&M 866, Oklahoma State 876, Texas Tech 876, Nebraska 887, Baylor 896, Kansas 897, Missouri 898, Kansas State 899, Colorado 899, Iowa State 910.

Texas’ Matthew Rosenfelt shot 210 to win the tourney, two strokes better than Oklahoma’s Brodie Flanders, 212.

It marked Oklahoma’s first conference title in 14 years.

Oklahoma’s last conference golf title came in 1992 as a member of the Big Eight. Before that, Oklahoma hadn’t won a conference title since the 1957 Big Seven championship.

The Sooners had finished second in 2001, third in 2002 and 2003 and were the runner-up again the past two years before finally taking the top spot this time.

“We’ve been close a lot of times,” Oklahoma coach Jim Ragan said. “You always want to win it. You have to get up there and get in a position to do it and finally we did, and we did. It was a fun win for us this week.”

Rosenfeld finished with a 69 for the individual crown.

“I played solid all week long,” Rosenfeld said. “I had some up and down points but my ball striking really came around, especially in the last nine holes. I was just fortunate to pull out a victory in a field where there were so many others who could also have done so.

“The one thing that would have made this better would have been for our team to win the Big 12.”
