The Alpha Tau Omega fraternity here staged a boxing tournament to raise funds for the Brett Patterson Memorial effort, a tribute to an ATO member who had died of stomach cancer in 1979. More than $1,200 was raised.

Prospective students visiting Kansas University for an Exploration Day program said they were concerned about the rising costs of college and said inflation might deter their pursuance of higher education.

Nationally, statistics indicated that runaway inflation was being checked after some interest rates had hit the mid-20 percent level. The cost of living in Lawrence was lower than in the average American city, surveys showed, about 5.2 percent below the national average. With the national average of 100 percent, Lawrence was at 94.8 of that figure.

Since the city of Lawrence had said no to a “cornfield mall” site on the city’s southwest side and the threat of a lawsuit had passed, the city-county planning commission was thinking about returning the region to county control via a “de-annexation” process.
