Lawrence and Douglas county

No new information in reported beating

April 24, 2006

The trail has gone cold in the investigation of a roadside beating reported late last year by a Kansas University professor.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lt. Kari Wempe said Thursday that detectives had finished their paperwork related to religious studies professor Paul Mirecki's report that he was beaten by two unknown men on Dec. 5, 2005, on a roadside south of Lawrence.

The office has not identified any suspects and, unless any new leads come in, the investigation is finished.

At the time, Mirecki was under fire for comments he had posted online critical of organized religion.

Talk about a slow news day. This story says they have nothing to say, and another on whether people like the name of a weather phenomenon.

but hey i've been wondering (not losing sleep, just wondering) what if anything was going on with this "case".

now i'm convinced-it was, is, and ever shall be totally fabricated bogus BS. shame on you mirecki.

Everyone, at some point in his/her life, is in crisis. This one just happened to be drug out in public. Let it go.

xenophonschild 9 years, 1 month ago

If a Baptist minister, or a Catholic priest, had been assaulted by two secular humanists, would the incident have been ho-hummed by the local constabulary?

What we need to do is sacrifice a goat. The proof one way or another is in the entrails.

He beat himself up going around a round a bout.

Hold your horses and think about this for a moment.

If you recall, the Douglas County sheriff's department searched Mirecki's office and seized his computer and files, probably in an investigation of Mirecki filing a false police report. We haven't heard anything about this investigation, either.

I personally think Mirecki was actually beaten, but one cannot draw conclusions from lack of evidence, both in the investigation of the beating itself and in the investigation of Mirecki (possibly for filing a false police report).

howard beale said: "Mirecki is lucky that the Sheriff's Dept. can't prove (or hasn't been able to prove) that the whole thing was crock.......otherwise the good professor would be arrested himself!"

Use your brain, man. The same logic can be used for the beating investigation (they haven't been able to prove it). A double standard? Many crimes go unsolved due to lack of evidence. A lack of evidence doesn't prove anything one way or another.

yourworstnightmare 9 years, 1 month ago

And think about it. Mirecki would have had to have caused himself physical harm to fake this beating. Think about that for a minute. I am not saying it is not possible, just very unlikely.

It seems much more plausible to me that a highly-visible, outspoken pariah would be beaten by a couple of thugs.

To believe without evidence that Mirecki had himself beaten is to display a prejudiced hatred of the man and his views, which makes it seem all the more likely to me that he was in fact beaten.

yourworstnightmare 9 years, 1 month ago

"But the police haven't been able to prove that Mirecki has made false statements......yet!"

-I guess you are too dense to see, but I will point it out. The police also haven't been able to prove that Mirecki was beaten, yet.

-Lack of evidence does not mean a thing, but I guess you are probably too stupid to realize that.

-What are the facts? There is one. Mirecki sustained a beating. Everthing else is just prejudiced speculation.

"Many people have (and do) fake their own beatings."

-Back up this statement with data comparing real and faked beating reports.

"All it would have taken to get the kind of bruises that Mirecki had was a single punch in the nose....and a few shots to the arms.....by another....and after Mirecki had a few shots of booze and or pills."

Listen to yourself ranting on about things you know nothing about. Now Mirecki is a alcoholic drug abuser? Where did this come from? I assume that the police would have taken a toxicology screen had they determined it was necessary. You are just pulling idiot ideas out of your arse.

Rant on, howard beale...

Facts reported inthe paper suggest he was south of town going to breakfast. Why pull over in the county in a secluded area if someone is tailgating you. COmmon sense says get to town and find a cop...unless... HMMM

Early Monday, Mirecki reported to deputies that he was driving in a rural area south of Lawrence when two men in a large pickup truck began tailgating him and he pulled over. He said he got out and the two men beat him with their fists and a metal object while making references to the recent Internet controversy.

He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

"I got the hell beat out of me," he told the Journal-World on Monday.

Key facts about the reported attack remained unclear Tuesday, including exactly where it happened. A report released by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the location was "unknown" and listed it as south of 31st Street on either East 1400 Road or East 1500 Road.

Louisiana Street turns into East 1400 Road outside the city limits. Haskell Avenue becomes East 1500 Road.

yourworstnightmare is the only posting that has made any sense. Are we to believe that Mirecki beat himself, self-inflicted bruises and contusions . . . to what end?

He was already a lightning rod of open hostility from the right-wing fruitcakes who worship their dead, crucified god, and much quieter support from secular humanists who applauded his views.

Professor Mirecki was attacked and beaten. Too bad he's an academic and did not have the presence of mind to search for license tag information, or give a more detailed physical description of his assailants.

yourworstnightmare 9 years, 1 month ago

howard beale flailed thusly: "Nightmare, You're an idiot. Your last post made no sense."

Probably not to you, as I wrote it at an adult level of comprehension. It was my mistake to try to use logic and reason. I should know my audience better: a mouth-breathing dullard too feeble to understand rational argument.

More howard lashing out: "Nightmare, Your ridiculous "double standard" remark told me all I need to know about you. You loser."

Glad to hear that you have me all figured out. Unfortunately, I still cannot comprehend of the vacuous idiocy that occupies your withered little mind. The depths of your idiocy and stupidity are mysteries to me.

badger 9 years, 1 month ago

sigh

Yeah, lack of an arrest or charges pressed totally means a crime was fabricated.

Some years ago, someone walked into my home through an open screen door while I was home, took a fairly significant sum of money, and ran out before I could get a good look at him. When I called the cops, they gave me a case number and told me not to expect any arrests or charges. By some of the ignorant logic displayed here, it never happened and I just hid the money.

Crimes, including burglaries, assaults, rapes, and murders, go unsolved all the time. Jumping to conclusions is just silly.

He probably owes somebody some money for some dope.

The point is, in a society where divergent points of view on issues are supposed to be tolerated, a man was assaulted for his beliefs.

And in Lawrence, the only true bastion of free thought and liberalism in the state. We should all hang our heads. Many of us disagree with the Phelps and Pennys and O'Connors who stink up the local landscape, but we would never attack them, physically, for their beliefs.

To deny the attack is almost as bad as lining up with the Phelps, Pennys and O'Connors.

badger is correct. Many crimes go unsolved and lack a suspect or any leads. The fact that the police have no leads in the Mirecki beating means nothing.

xeno is also correct. Denial of the attack, or at least the firm conviction that Mirecki faked it, does put one in line with extreme elements. Basically, one is saying that one needs no real proof but that strength of feeling and the "evil" of the man and his beliefs are enough to convince them of his corruption.

Wrongtinkle:

All the old sky-god religions need to be laid to rest. They do, and have, cost more than they're worth. And the Islamic fundamentalists are the worst; we may eventually be sucked into another world war over their stupid religion.

Note that OBL has called for a boycott of all American goods in Islamic countries; if other Islamic fruitcake/religious leaders follow his lead, they could make our balance of trade deficit even greater.

Also, never thought it was proper that Mirecki's personal emails were made public.

VoijaRisa 9 years, 1 month ago

---"referrint [sic] to christian as "fundies""---

Why are Christians so quick to want to feel persecuted? Fundie does not mean ALL christians. It's short for fundamentalists and implies only the extremist branch out to destroy seperation of church and state. Trying to imply that Dr. Mirecki was aiming his comments at is a pathetic attempt to drum up an emotional appeal without using any real logic.

"The point is, in a society where divergent points of view on issues are supposed to be tolerated, a man was assaulted for his beliefs."

Beautiful. We don't know who did it, or even if it happened, but we do know that it happened because of his "beliefs." Yet he is an atheist, who professes to believe in nothing.

I love it.

VoijaRisa 9 years, 1 month ago

---"Yet he is an atheist, who professes to believe in nothing."---

The stereotyping of atheists just doesn't quit....

Atheists don't believe in "nothing"; just a lack of dieties. Athesits frequently belie in many other intangible forces such as love or the goodness of humanity in general.

Try getting your info straight before you go make ignorant comments.

Godot 9 years, 1 month ago

Wow. what a concept. Love and goodness are "intangible forces." That actually does resemble a "belief."

Let me know when you codify your new religion.

Godot 9 years, 1 month ago

So, does the belief system of atheists include the assumption that all bruises about one's face are caused by people who hate them for their beliefs?

VoijaRisa 9 years, 1 month ago

I'll be sure to apply for tax exemption as well :P

xenophonschild 9 years, 1 month ago

Godot:

What is your definition of an atheist? I don't believe in any of the old sky-god religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) but I do believe in an "It"; that God is an abstraction that controls matter through natural physical laws. Does that mean I'm an atheist?

Godot 9 years, 1 month ago

Xeno, I don't know. What do you call yourself?

xenophonschild 9 years, 1 month ago

A "god-intoxicated" person! When all is said and done, what we really want is to understand the nature of God. It might be too much to expect human beings to grasp the concept of God - like teaching a fish calculus - but, then again, it might prove to be not all that complex. But we have to work toward it, and not get bogged down in the traditional drivel that the old sky-god religions are.

I'm done for the night.

yourworstnightmare 9 years, 1 month ago

rightstinker said "why is it we try to exalt murderous Arab religious zealots but seem to think it's OK to bash Christians"

Who is exalting murderous arabs here, rightstinker? Again, you are making things up.

Actions of fundamentalist extremists of all religions, including islam and christianity, are to be "bashed".
