Poet’s Showcase

Sanctuary

By Susan Carman

Grace flows over me

like warm honey,

coating jagged edges within.

I kneel on grass anointed with dew

to worship at this altar, drink

of its silence. Kaleidoscopes

of lavender, lilac, and fuchsia

cascade over rocks near water’s edge.

The lake exhales foggy breath

in morning’s yawning glow,

floating ducks cluster,

still as decoys.
