Old home town – 100 years ago today
From the Lawrence Weekly World for April 20, 1906: “The cornerstone of the $3 million office structure for members of the U.S. House was laid April 14 in the presence of a distinguished audience, including some from Kansas and Lawrence. Grand Master Brown of the local Masons struck the stone with the gavel used by George Washington in laying the cornerstone of the Capitol. : C.V. Williams’ harness shop on the corner of Wisconsin and Elliott Streets was destroyed by fire last night. The fire started from a defective flue and had gained such headway that the fire brigade with its bucket teams could not handle it.”
