Greinke takes first step back
Royals hurler reports to extended spring training
Chicago ? Kansas City Royals pitcher Zack Greinke, who left the team in spring training to go home where reports say he was seeing a sports psychologist, has reported to the team’s extended spring training in Surprise, Ariz.
Greinke, who was 5-17 last season in 33 starts, left spring training suddenly on Feb. 25 and returned to his Orlando, Fla. home. He reported to Surprise on Tuesday and worked out.
When he could return to the Royals is not certain.
“There is no timetable,” David Witty, the team’s vice president of communications, said before Wednesday’s game against the White Sox.
“We’ll have to see.”
After getting in shape during extended spring training, Greinke probably will go on a rehab assignment with one of Kansas City’s minor-league affiliates.
The 22-year-old Greinke went 8-11 with a 3.97 earned-run average in 2004 after being called up and was one of the Royals’ most promising young starters with a variety of pitches. His 17 losses last season were the most in the AL. He had a 5.80 ERA.
Greinke was 16-5 in his brief minor-league career that began in 2002. He was the Royals’ first-round selection (sixth overall) in the draft that season.
