Old home town – 40 years ago today

Kansas University Chancellor Clarke Wescoe served as grand marshal of the Kansas Relays parade because of the university’s centennial.

Hamilton Salsich, KU graduate student from St. Louis and an assistant instructor in English, said he would refuse to pay the portion of his federal income taxes that might go to finance U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Salsich was to become a highly visible campus activist opposed to Indochina activities by Washington.

The Lawrence Jaycees announced their intentions to take over the operation of the annual four-day summer horse show after the American Legion and a private group headed by Kansas football coach Jack Mitchell had found the job too time-consuming.
