Officer rear-ends driver at yellow light

A Lawrence Police officer rear-ended another vehicle just before noon Tuesday at Iowa Street and Harvard Road.

According to police, a patrol officer driving north on Iowa struck a Pontiac Grand Am driven by Kansas University student Kalli Bennett.

Bennett said she decided to stop at a yellow light at the intersection, rather than trying to speed through it. When she stopped, the officer hit her from behind.

There were no injuries, but Bennett said an initial insurance estimate showed her car suffered nearly $5,000 in damage. Witnesses said they saw the police car being hauled away by a tow truck after the accident.

Police said a report had not yet been filed, and did not name the officer involved in the wreck.
