Brown might return

Depending on how he feels today, Larry Brown may or may not coach the Knicks in their season finale against the Nets tonight at Continental Airlines Arena. Whether or not he coaches the team, Knicks officials said Brown would wait until getaway day Thursday to address the media for the first time since his hospitalization last Thursday in Cleveland for an acid reflux disorder.

When Brown does speak, he’s expected to reiterate his commitment to the Knicks for the remaining four seasons and $40 million of his $50-million contract.

According to Joe Glass, Brown’s agent, the 65-year-old coach felt “much better” Tuesday. “If he feels the same way that he (did Tuesday), then he’ll coach,” Glass said.

As for speculation Brown might attempt to get out of his contract after missing the previous three games for medical reasons, Glass said: “This incident has nothing to do with any of Larry’s plans for the future as far as he and the Knicks are concerned. This is an isolated incident. His plans are the same as they were before. He’ll be making changes over the summer, as he said, and he’ll be coaching the Knicks.”

Whether anyone believes Brown is a matter of perception. On the one hand, the Knicks (22-59) are Brown’s 11th coaching job. On the other hand, he’s never left a team until it showed improvement, which would make it tough to walk out on a team that could become the first in franchise history to reach the 60-loss mark tonight.

Asked if Brown remained committed to improving the Knicks, Glass said: “He’s a very, very competitive individual, and the results of this season have been very stressful.”
