Cabrera finds control

Orioles pitcher not wild in win over Angels

? The Baltimore Orioles never really were worried about Daniel Cabrera’s effectiveness, even after he issued 16 walks in his first two starts this season.

After the right-hander’s performance Monday night, the only people who have to worry about Cabrera are those who must face him.

Cabrera displayed surprising control while pitching seven innings of five-hit ball, and the Orioles got a home run from Miguel Tejada in a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Cabrera (1-1) came in with an 11.37 earned-run average after walking seven in 11â3 innings against Boston and nine more against Tampa Bay on April 12. Facing the Angels, he struck out six, did not allow an earned run and yielded his only walk with two outs in the seventh.

“Everyone made a big deal out of the first two starts, saying he was going to walk everyone in the ballpark. Daniel doesn’t do that all the time,” Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo said. “Tonight we got what we really expect from him.”

Brian Roberts drove in two runs for the Orioles, who built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings against Jeff Weaver (0-2). Baltimore took three of four from Los Angeles after going 2-4 against the Angels a year ago.

Red Sox 7, Mariners 6

Boston – Mark Loretta hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, and the Red Sox rallied past Seattle in the annual Patriots Day game.

David Ortiz homered twice for Boston. Carl Everett connected for Seattle, which took a 6-5 lead in the ninth on pinch-hitter Roberto Petagine’s RBI grounder.

Indians 10, Tigers 2

Detroit – Paul Byrd pitched seven solid innings, and Casey Blake’s solo homer sparked a six-run third for the Indians. Chris Shelton hit his ninth homer for Detroit. He is tied for the major-league lead.
