Presidential vote count slows for holiday

? Vote counting in Peru’s presidential election slowed Friday for the Easter holiday weekend, leaving the country in suspense over who will face nationalist Ollanta Humala in a runoff.

Because no candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote in April 9’s balloting, a runoff between the two top vote-getters will be held in May or June.

With nearly 89 percent of the votes counted, Humala led with 31 percent, enough to guarantee him a place in the runoff. Former President Alan Garcia had 24.4 percent and former Congresswoman Lourdes Flores had 23.4 percent, a difference of less than 113,000 votes.

About 88 percent of the 250,000 ballots cast by Peruvians living abroad remain uncounted.

Election officials said Wednesday that more than 7,600 vote-tally sheets have not yet been counted because of legal challenges or problems with data entry into the computers.
