Guerrero hits pair; Angels end skid

? Vladimir Guerrero homered twice and drove in three runs to back a fine pitching performance by John Lackey, and the Los Angeles Angels snapped a three-game skid by beating the Baltimore Orioles, 9-3, Sunday.

Chone Figgins also homered for the Angels, who got 13 hits in their most productive offensive showing of the season.

Guerrero hit solo homers in the first and seventh innings and an RBI single in the fifth. The first-inning drive was his first extra-base hit since homering in his first at-bat on opening day.

Lackey (2-1) allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez entered in the ninth, but left with an apparent leg injury after Jay Gibbons hit a one-out RBI double. Brendan Donnelly got the final two outs.

Jeff Conine homered for the Orioles, whose three-game winning streak ended. Javy Lopez also hit one over the wall, but he passed teammate Miguel Tejada on the basepaths and was forced to settle for a single.

Orioles starter Kris Benson (1-2) gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings.

Tigers 1, Indians 0

Detroit – Chris Shelton hit his major-league-leading eighth home run, and Mike Maroth threw seven shutout innings for the Tigers. Shelton homered over the left-center field fence against Cliff Lee (1-1) with one out in the fourth.

Red Sox 3, Mariners 2

Boston – Josh Beckett won his third straight start, and Alex Gonzalez had an RBI single for the Red Sox. Coming off the best of his four seasons with Florida, Beckett (3-0) joined Boston in an offseason trade and has allowed one earned run in seven innings in each of his three starts for a 1.29 ERA.

Yankees 9, Twins 3

Minneapolis – Jason Giambi hit two long home runs, and New York avoided what would have been Minnesota’s first three-game sweep of the Yankees since 1991.

Rangers 5, Athletics 3

Oakland, Calif. – Mark Teixeira hit a two-run home run in the ninth off Huston Street that tied the score at 3, and Brad Wilkerson hit a go-ahead double off the Oakland closer. Street (1-1) had converted 21 consecutive save chances.

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 4

Chicago – Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye hit two-run homers, and Scott Podsednik broke out of his 3-for-38 slump with a triple and single.
