D-Rays rally sinks Royals
K.C. starting pitchers still winless in 2006
St. Petersburg, Fla. ? The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have made a habit this season of coming up with late rallies.
Ty Wigginton drove in three runs, helping the Devil Rays beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-3, on Saturday night.
Trailing 3-2, the Devil Rays loaded the bases with no outs against Luke Hudson (0-1) in the seventh. Andrew Sisco came in to strike out Travis Lee before Jonny Gomes walked on four pitches to tie the game. After pinch-hitter Damon Hollins struck out, Wigginton lined a two-run single to center to give the Devil Rays a 5-3 lead.
Royals right-hander Mike Wood gave up two runs and three hits in four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked five.
Kansas City, which has lost six straight, still is looking for its first win this season from a starting pitcher. The starters have failed to pitch into the sixth inning in six of 10 games and are 0-6.
The Royals have walked 35 – including eight Saturday – in the past five games.
“It’s just the same old story every night,” Kansas City manager Buddy Bell said. “We just walk people. It’s hard to explain. They just have to do better. it’s the big leagues.”
The Devil Rays, who are 6-6 through 12 games, have won four times when trailing after the sixth inning. It’s the second-best start in franchise history, only behind a 7-5 mark in 1998.

Kansas City Royals left fielder Emil Brown (35) points to home plate after shortstop Angel Berroa (4) caught Tampa Bay Devil Rays' Ty Wiggington's fly ball to shallow left during the second inning of a baseball game Saturday night, April 15, 2006 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes tagged up and scored on the play.
Seth McClung (1-2) gave up three runs and nine hits in seven innings. He had allowed 12 runs and 12 hits over eight innings in losing his previous two starts of the season.
“My confidence wasn’t shaken, but it’s nice to get a good start, and it’s nice to get a win,” McClung said. “I’m more concerned about the team winning than my winning. I’m just glad the guys were there and they got everything going.”
Tampa Bay added a run in the eighth on Carl Crawford’s RBI double to make it 6-3. Former Royal Shawn Camp pitched two innings for his first save.
Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on Mark Grudzielanek’s sacrifice fly.
Notes: Royals CF David DeJesus (left hamstring) was in the lineup after missing the past six games. He was 1-for-3 with a walk. … Camp has three career saves. It was his first since Aug. 1, 2004, in his rookie season with the Royals.
