Always late? These tips will help

Being chronically late is often attributed to one of three reasons:

1) Inability to estimate time needed accurately.

2) Too overwhelmed to stay on task.

3) Engaging in endeavors that are low on the priority scale.

While being on time can be difficult for most people at one point or another, those who are chronically late might find relief with these five tips from time-management expert Brook Noel, author of “The Change Your Life Challenge: A 70 Day Life Makeover Program for Women”:

1. Set a timer: Whether it’s an alarm clock, cell phone, computer, stop-watch or timer, set it at least 30 minute prior to when you need to leave. As soon as it “dings,” get up and get moving.

2. Write down your to-do or appointment list the night before: We are more likely to follow through when we write things down.

3. Phone a friend: Ask a friend to help you stay on time by calling you to remind you to leave for an engagement.

4. Give up the cape: Even Superwoman or Superman has to say no sometimes. Block off times in your schedule so you’re not running from appointment to appointment. When we have balance in our lives, we’re more apt to be on time when it counts.

5. Share your goal to be on time with your friends, family and co-workers: You are more likely to be accountable when you have verbalized your goals to others. Since members of this “inner circle” is likely the most affected by your lateness, they will be a strong source of encouragement.
