Willis nets win No. 1
Miami ? Dontrelle Willis gained his first win of the season in his worst outing.
Willis overcame a two-run first inning and also drove in a run with a bunt Friday night to help the Florida Marlins beat the Washington Nationals, 5-3.
Josh Willingham homered, Chris Aguila had a two-run double and Miguel Cabrera an RBI single for the Marlins, who have won consecutive games for the first time under new manager Joe Girardi.
“The resilience of the team showed tonight,” Willis said. “We could have packed it in early, especially the way they were hitting the ball. We didn’t. We kept the game close.”
Willis (1-0), 22-10 last year, had no-decisions and received little offensive support in his first two starts. He improved his career April record to 9-0 despite giving up three runs (two earned), eight hits, two walks and three hit batters in 52â3 innings.
Phillies 10, Rockies 8
Denver – Chase Utley hit his third career grand slam and homered twice for the second straight day, and Philadelphia hung on to beat Colorado. Utley was in a 1-for-19 slide with no homers this season before connecting twice in Thursday’s 7-6 victory at Atlanta.
Diamondbacks 5, Astros 1
Phoenix – Brandon Webb pitched eight strong innings for his first victory, and Arizona beat Houston. Webb (1-0), who led the Diamondbacks with 14 victories last season, had pitched well in his first two starts, but did not receive a decision.
Mets 4, Brewers 3
New York – Tom Glavine took advantage of the lowest-scoring team in the major leagues, striking out 11 Milwaukee batters over six innings. Glavine (2-0) limited the Brewers to six singles and earned his 277th victory.
Cubs 11, Pirates 6
Pittsburgh – Matt Murton’s bases-loaded triple and Todd Walker’s four hits helped give Chicago a six-run lead.
Reds 1, Cardinals 0
St. Louis – Aaron Harang stymied St. Louis for seven shutout innings and drove in his fourth career run for Cincinnati. Harang (2-1) allowed four hits with four strikeouts and one walk to the only batter he faced in the eighth to beat the Cardinals for the first time in four career decisions.
Braves 5, Padres 4
Atlanta – Jeff Francoeur homered for the second night in a row, hitting a two-out shot in the eighth inning for Atlanta. Oscar Villareal (4-0) became the first four-game winner in the majors.
