Strong storms pass through northeast Kansas

Storms prompt tornado warnings

Strong storms moved through northeast Kansas this evening, prompting several tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings in the Lawrence area.

Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties were both placed under tornado warnings about 8:12 p.m. when a tornado was spotted at 8:05 p.m. south of Tonganoxie near Interstate 70, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

The storms passed through quickly, moving into Missouri. The Leavenworth tornado warning ended at 8:45 p.m. and the tornado warning was lifted from Wyandotte County at 9 p.m.

Schack said Douglas County was getting some heavy rainfall shortly before 9 p.m., but that was expected to push off to the east very quickly. She said Eudora would be getting some heavy rain and possibly some pea-sized hail when the storm passes through.

The Lawrence area was under a severe thunderstorm warning earlier tonight and was under a strong wind advisory through 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

At 7:44 p.m., local law enforcement reported a severe thunderstorm producing quarter-sized hail four miles south of Lecompton or about eight miles west of Lawrence, moving northeast at 50 mph, the weather service reported. However, the weather service canceled the thunderstorm warning for Douglas County at 8 p.m.

Strong storms have been moving across northeast Kansas most of the evening.

The city of Lawrence and Douglas County are not included in any tornado watch areas, although Lawrence was experiencing some strong winds this evening, gusting up to 51 mph at times, according to the National Weather Service reporting station at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

Strong storms were lining up this evening along U.S. Highway 75 north of Topeka starting about 6 tonight, with reports of hail and strong storms, according to Channel 49 meteorologists in Topeka. Hail the size of golf balls was reported falling in Topeka about 7 p.m., according to Channel 49 (which is Channel 12 on Sunflower Broadband).

Brown, Jackson and Nemaha counties north of Topeka were under a tornado warning until 7:15 p.m. Two tornado were reportedly on the ground south and east of Hiawatha in southern Brown County, Channel 49 reported at 6:55 p.m.
