Marci Francisco was elected mayor of Lawrence. The vote was 4-1 with Don Binns the lone opponent. Barkley Clark was chosen vice mayor. In the audience were Francisco’s parents, Dr. W. David and Jean Francisco, and her great-uncle, 96-year-old Finus Francisco, whose father, W.J., had been Lawrence mayor from 1914 to 1918.

Kansas University named its first female vice chancellor for academic affairs, Deanell Tacha, 35. Frances Horowitz was serving as vice chancellor for research graduate studies and public service.
