Amy and Jason Carrillo, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Elsa Rose Carrillo, born March 28, 2006, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She has a brother, Alexander, 2. Maternal grandparents are Sarah and Steve Rose. Paternal grandparents are Gaye Carrillo and Pete Carrillo. Great-grandparents are Petra Carrillo, Nancy Briggs, Colleen Partee, Eleutrio Carrillo, Peggy and Bill Cumpton and Elsa LeSage.

Daren and Robyne Pippert, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Zachary Joseph DeWayne Pippert, born March 28, 2006, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam. He has two sisters, Samantha, 12, and Haleigh, 10, and a brother, Joshua, 5. Grandparents are Judi O’Grady, Eudora, and Albert and Betty Pippert, Lawrence.

Southwest Junior High School claimed the seventh-place trophy in the K-8 Championship Division of the National Junior High School Chess Championships, which were April 7-9 in Louisville, Ky. Team members were Keely Stenseng, Thomas Clark, Thomas Reams, Peter Lesslie and Kellen Cross.

Individually, Thomas Clark won a first-place trophy for his top finish among players rated under 1200. Keely Stenseng won a second-place trophy for her finish among players rated under 1400.

Cole Reams, of Quail Run School; Nate McFadden, of South Junior High School; and Roy Wedge, of Central Junior High School, also competed at the Junior High Nationals.

Tensie Oldfather, a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, will be receiving the Social Justice Award from the Prairie Star District of the Unitarian Universalist Assn.

Oldfather is being honored for her many years of social justice work, both at her church and in the community. She has helped found a nursery school for low-income families, provided support for people recently dismissed from the state hospital, and currently serves on the board of an agency that assists abused, neglected or abandoned children. Oldfather will receive her award at the Prairie Star District Annual Conference on April 29 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Brad Reed, principal of Oskaloosa High School, announces Students of the Month for March. They are Katie Beerbower, freshman; Jason Rodriguez, junior; and Joe Crawford and Kristy Seifert, seniors. They were recognized for their contributions in the school and community. They received a free lunch at a Lawrence restaurant for their efforts.

Jamie McGovern, a 2005 graduate of Free State High School, was named to the dean’s list at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., by receiving at least a 3.83 grade-point average. McGovern is the daughter of Jody Anderson and Jim McGovern, Lawrence.

Brenda Hughes, Wellsville, and Brandy Jones, Perry, have been named 2006 Shepherd Scholars at Emporia State University. To be considered for a Shepherd Scholarship, the student must be an ESU junior who has completed at least 60 credit hours of coursework and has maintained a minimum 3.5 grade-point average. Students are nominated for the honor, and all nominations undergo a rigorous committee review.

Honorees receive a plaque commemorating their selection, a $1,200 scholarship, and are designated ESU Shepherd Scholars during their senior year.
