Parents encouraged to bring children to school roundups

Lawrence parents whose children will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 are encouraged to take part in this year’s kindergarten roundup.

The roundups help school officials know how many kindergartners to expect for the coming school year.

“Parents are asked to bring their children’s immunization records and birth certificates,” said Krin Bowman, kindergarten teacher at Quail Run elementary.

Though roundups vary from school to school, most are set up so that children take part in get-acquainted activities while their parents fill out enrollment forms.

“At Quail Run, I’ll read the kids a story, and then we play hokey-pokey,” Bowman said. “And then we’ll break up into little stations that give them an idea of what kindergarten will be like.”

Each roundup session lasts about 90 minutes. Parents who are unsure which school their child will attend should call 832-5000.

Prairie Park, Schwegler, Pinckney, Broken Arrow and Woodlawn schools already have had their roundups.

¢ Wakarusa Valley, April 19.

¢ Sunflower, April 20-21.

¢ Sunset Hill, April 21.

¢ New York, April 26.

¢ Langston Hughes, April 27-28.

¢ Cordley, April 28.

Starting times and number of sessions vary, so parents are asked to call their school for more details.
