Governor shoots turkey, others unscathed

Texas bird hunting with Vice President Dick Cheney has its risks.

But when Kansas politicos go hunting apparently it is still safe for all but the prey.

The governor’s office reported today there was only one casualty – a 17.88-pound tom turkey – which Gov. Kathleen Sebelius took down with one shotgun blast.

The governor’s office said Sebelius was carrying a 20-gauge shotgun this morning during the governor’s Annual One-Shot Turkey Hunt near El Dorado Lake.

“It was a beautiful morning and the birds came in just as the sun was coming up,” Sebelius said. “I had the perfect opportunity so I took it. What a great way to start out the morning.”

Sebelius’ hunting guide was Secretary of Wildlife and Parks Mike Hayden, who survived the hunt unscathed.

“The Governor’s getting to be a seasoned turkey hunter. It was her first shot and she killed it clean, instantly,” Hayden said.

The governor’s office said the hunt, in its 20th year, was started by Hayden in 1987, when he was governor.

It was developed with the concept of inviting key people from different professions as celebrities to come to the region and experience the hospitality and warmth that is the tradition of Kansas, according to the governor’s office.
