Another record? Temperatures to climb to near 90

Chance for thunderstorms Saturday evening

Get ready for what might be another record hot day – temperatures will sizzle up to nearly 90 degrees, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The warm weather will definitely continue,” Schack said.

Lawrence set a new record high temperature on Thursday of 93 degrees, eclipsing the old record for April 13 of 90 degrees, set in 1936.

Today’s temperature might also make it into the record books.

Schack is predicting a high of 89 degrees this afternoon. That would tie the highest recorded temperature on this date of 89 degrees, set in 2002. The average high temperature for this date is 67 degrees.

At 7:20 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 71 degrees, the humidity was 66 percent and winds were from the southwest at 18 mph, gusting to 26 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 45 degrees. The record low was 24 degrees, set in 1950.

Schack said today’s winds will switch from southwest to west today at 10 to 15 mph, she said.

“We will see a few more clouds today than we saw yesterday,” she said.

Overnight the temperature will fall to 63 degrees by early Saturday morning. Saturday’s high will climb to 85 degrees, she said.

The chances for thunderstorms increase throughout the day on Saturday, with the greatest chance after 7 p.m., Schack said.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the Lawrence area is just to the very southern edge of severe weather, Schack said.

“The main threat would be hail and strong winds,” she said.

“I think we’ll have a break on Sunday. It looks like a nice Easter Sunday,” she said.

Sunday’s morning low temperature will be 55 degrees, climbing to a high of 80 degrees by Sunday afternoon, she said.
