Vehicles funnel into one lane of traffic over the Massachusetts Street bridge. North bound traffic was forced to reroute through North Lawrence on Monday as street crews made temporary repairs to the bump at the intersection.

Road work is on schedule to repair a notorious bump near North Second and Locust streets in North Lawrence – causing a different kind of traffic problem.

The construction work caused a long line of vehicles to back up across the bridge and down New Hampshire Street during rush hour. Despite the slow go, Douglas County emergency dispatchers said they had received only “two or three” complaints from the public, and no accidents had been reported.

City crews began work on the rough spot in the road in front of Johnny’s Tavern on Monday. Lisa Patterson, a spokeswoman for the city, said the work was expected to be completed by 6 p.m. today.

Patterson said crews were grinding off the bump and attempting to “feather in” additional asphalt to fill in a dip that contributes to the roughness of the road.

The bump is suspected of contributing to an accident that injured 15-year-old Billy Baker on April 1. Billy, who is autistic and legally blind, was walking along the east side of the road with his father when a trailer attached to a Toyota sport utility vehicle detached, came onto the sidewalk and struck him. The boy received significant injuries to his right leg, which required surgery.

While construction work is under way, northbound motorists along North Second Street are being detoured onto Elm Street. Southbound traffic will be restricted from one lane from Perry Street to the Kansas River Bridge.
