Topekans Koch, Polter win Perry crappie tourney

? Ryan Koch and Dennis Polter, both of Topeka, caught the biggest fish – a 1.59-pounder – in the Crappie USA qualifying tournament last weekend at Perry Lake.

Second-place in the big-fish contest went to John Bergland of Lawrence and Frank Bergland of Meriden with a 1.44-pound crappie. Koch and Polter won $245. The Berglands took home $105.

Charlie Bunting and Travis Bunting, both of Jefferson City, Mo., were the overall winners in the semipro division with a total catch of 8.06 pounds. They won $850.

Steve Cross and Terry Simmons, both of Overbrook, finished second with 7.7 pounds and earned $500. Koch and Polter were third with 7.69 pounds and pocketed an additional $475.

Ray Brooks and Sherry Brooks, both of Perry, finished fourth with 7.3 pounds and won $300.

In the amateur division, Bryan Saddler of Independence, Mo., and Roy Saddler of Camdenton, Mo., were first with 7.91 pounds of fish and won $500.

The Berglands finished third in that division with 7.37 pounds and pocketed another $150.

The first-place team in each division qualified for Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic in September in Sheffield, Ala. The other top finishers qualified for regional events.
