FSHS takes top honors on track; swims 2nd

Free State High track athletes Alysha Valencia and Austin Winn each earned top individual honors Saturday at the Blue Valley Relays.

Valencia was named the outstanding girls athlete of the meet after winning the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 19.93 seconds) and the 3,200 (11:16.25) and running the anchor leg in the victorious distance medley relay (13:16.44).

Brooke Carter also won the long jump after a leap of 15 feet, 8 inches as the Firebirds finished third in team points with 1131â2. Overland Park Aquinas won the girls team competition with 152 points.

Winn was named the outstanding boys athlete after winning the 100 (11.11), running legs in a pair of relay victories – the 4×100 (43.10) and the 4×200 (1:31.30) – and also contributing a lap in a sixth-place finish in the 4×400 relay (3:43.10).

The Firebirds also picked up three victories in the field events, as triple jumper Shawn James (40-6), shot putter Richard Flaig (49-31â2) and javelin thrower Ryder Wertz (157-7) won.

Free State finished second in the team battle with 113 points, just three behind team champ Shawnee Mission East.

FSHS takes second at swimming invite

Wichita – Ashley Robinson won two individual events and swam the anchor leg in a triumphant relay to lead the Free State High girls swimming team to a second-place finish Saturday at the Wichita Northwest Invitational.

Robinson won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 56.02 seconds and claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:08.37.

The Kansas University signee also teamed with Sarah Clark, Kelsi Mishler and Becca Glass to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.33.

Whitley Jackson also qualified for state in the 500 free after a seventh-place finish, while Glass qualified in the 100 butterfly with her third-place showing.

“I think it was pretty good,” Free State coach Jama Crady said of her team’s performance. “This is our first invitational, so it’s our first big meet. I think we did well to place second.”
