Newcomers Nancy Shontz and Tom Gleason and incumbent Barkley Clark were the voters’ choices for the open city commission seats. Former mayor Nancy Hambleton, incumbent Bob Schumm and Mike Amyx (who earlier had withdrawn from the race saying Shontz and Gleason represented an undercover coalition) finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Shontz got 6,044 votes, Clark 5,706, Gleason 5,645. Hambleton got 5,000 votes.

Winning the three contested seats on the local school board were Roger Pine (7,369 votes), Bob Davis (5,667) and Lorraine Michel (4,706). Pine and Davis were incumbents, Michel a newcomer.

After a two-year study of Douglas County government, the local chapter of the League of Women voters said it hadn’t found any major problems with the administration setup for the county or the people involved. There was the recommendation that the commission hold some night meetings to allow working people to attend and get involved. At the time, commission meetings were primarily afternoon events.
