Nobody was making any bets on the outcome of the city commission election just around the corner. Nancy Shontz, top vote-getter in the primary election, said, “No predictions; we’ll have to wait and see.” Incumbent Bob Schumm saw a narrow margin for the three primary winners in the six-person field.

A six-member conference committee effectively put the finishing touches on the Kansas Board of Regents fiscal 1982 budget package and Kansas University officials were hopeful that funding cuts could be restored by the Legislature before final passage.

Voters had been casting more absentee ballots than usual for the coming city commission and school board election, and County Clerk Patty Jaimes said that could indicate a higher-than-usual turnout.
