Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 6, 1906: “J.L. Brady of Lawrence has done much in the legislature to try to get more statewide support for our university. He admits that sometimes his hands are tied by people not attuned to the need for a great university but he says he is making headway on this most important project. : Alfanso Lo Brutto, an Italian laborer, was instantly killed by a Union Pacific work train in North Lawrence this morning. He was one of an army of Italian and Greek workers employed on the Union Pacific double track work. The victim was about 35 and was described as a good worker. : The Bosserman brothers had a fight at Clinton and one nearly killed the other by hitting him with a heavy weight and fracturing his skull. The two had words and then violence resulted. The one brother is now in jail. : It’s about housecleaning time and that is a good time to wire your house for electricity. You know you will want a few lights and a fan this summer, as well as an electric iron and sewing machine. We have several good people to do wiring and connecting.”
