You can probably leave your coat at home today – temperatures are headed up into the 70s. And you might not need that umbrella, either.

“We have only the very slight chance of an isolated storm,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “Most of them are well off to the south and east.”

But major storms could be brewing Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening, she said.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 48 degrees, the humidity was 61 percent and winds were from the east at 8 mph, making the windchill 44 degrees.

The low temperature for this date is 42 degrees. The record low temperature was 11 degrees, set in 1920.

Clouds will increase this afternoon and winds will be 5 to 15 mph, Schack said.

Temperatures will climb to 73 degrees by late afternoon, she said. The average high temperature for this date is 64 degrees. The record high was 89 degrees, set in 2000.

The National Weather Service says the chance for thunderstorms for Lawrence is 20 percent today and 30 percent tonight.

“Any activity for us will be very isolated,” Schack said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 55 degrees by early Thursday morning, Schack said. Winds will be from south at 10 to 20 mph with the high reaching 80 degrees, she said.

Schack said the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed the Lawrence area in the “moderate risk” area for severe weather Thursday afternoon and Thursday night.

If storms develop, they would be capable of producing hail and strong, straight-line winds, she said. The National Weather Service said they could also produce a few tornados. The greatest risk will be across northeast to east central Kansas, generally east of a line from Emporia north to Manhattan.

There is another chance for thunderstorms during the day on Friday, Schack said.

Friday’s morning low temperature will be 47 degrees and Friday’s high will be 63 degrees, she said.
