Washington ? Rep. Cynthia McKinney may be taking on the police, but her colleagues aren’t backing her. In fact, they are sponsoring a resolution praising police for their professionalism.

The Georgia Democrat has charged the Capitol Police with racial profiling after a run-in with a police officer. McKinney claims she was acting in self-defense when she hit an officer who asked her to stop on her way into a House office building last week. She was not wearing her lapel pin identifying her as a a member of Congress and police said she refused to stop. A federal prosecutor is considering pressing criminal charges.

“I don’t think it’s fair to attack the Capitol Police and I think it’s time that we show our support for them,” said Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., a sponsor of the measure. Ignoring a police officer’s order to stop, or hitting one, “is never OK,” he said.
