Bonds ready to go in today’s opener against San Diego

Barry Bonds singled to left field and flied out to right Sunday in the San Francisco Giants’ 5-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics in the final game of spring training.

“I didn’t play as much as I would have liked to play, but I played enough to be able to go through it,” said Bonds, who missed the entire 2005 spring training schedule and all but 14 regular-season games. “But I think the training staff did a great job. (Dr. Lewis) Yocum’s done a great job. We’re all on the same page. Everybody kept everything on pace, even my workouts the last few days.”

Bonds batted .478 with four home runs in 10 exhibition games and quickly will be tested against the talented pitchers for San Diego, Atlanta and Houston.

The Giants are happy to have the seven-time NL MVP healthy heading into the season following three operations on his right knee last year. San Francisco opens today at San Diego.

“It’s a big difference,” manager Felipe Alou said. “It gives me a lot of confidence. The guys feel great about having him back. The new guys are excited about being his teammates and watching him hit.”

Oakland starter Joe Blanton, No. 5 in the A’s rotation, allowed three runs and six hits in six innings at San Francisco to beat Giants’ fifth starter Jamey Wright.

Angels 4, Dodgers 2

At Anaheim, Calif., Juan Rivera hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the Freeway Series finale. The teams played to a rain-shortened 6-6 tie Friday night at Dodger Stadium, then followed that up with 10 scoreless innings Saturday night in Anaheim. Until this year, there was only one tie game in the 94 previous spring training games between them since 1962. Dodgers center fielder Kenny Lofton has a strained left calf and will begin the season on the disabled list for the first time in his 16-year career, joining shortstop Cesar Izturis (elbow) and outfielder Jayson Werth (wrist).

Phillies 5, Red Sox 0

At Philadelphia, Ryan Howard hit his 11th homer of the exhibition season, a Phillies record. Howard hit a two-run single in the first off loser Matt Clement, and Aaron Rowand followed with an RBI single. Alex Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Howard homered in the eighth off Mike Bumatay.

Red Wings 15, Twins 3

At Fort Myers, Fla., Jason Bartlett, Jason Tyner and Terry Tiffee – the last three players cut by the Twins – helped the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings romp over the Twins. Minnesota’s No. 5 starter, Scott Baker, gave up 11 runs and 10 hits in 12â3 innings, including a grand slam by Garrett Jones.
